Mahias sale sul terzo gradino del podio nella gara WorldSSP di Portimao

La nona gara del campionato mondiale Supersport si è disputata oggi all’Autodromo Internacional do Algarve di Portimao in Portogallo.
Nella Superpole di ieri i due piloti del Kawasaki Puccetti Racing, Lucas Mahias e Hikari Okubo, avevano ottenuto rispettivamente la terza e la settima posizione e quindi oggi il pilota francese ha preso il via dalla prima fila ed il giapponese dalla terza, nella gara che si è disputata in una giornata calda e soleggiata.
Mahias partiva molto bene allo spegnersi del semaforo rosso, e si portava in terza posizione. Mantenendo un ritmo molto elevato, il pilota francese al quarto giro transitava al secondo posto, e lo manteneva sino al settimo passaggio quando tornava terzo, ma sempre nel gruppetto di testa, che nel frattempo aveva preso un buon vantaggio sul resto del gruppo.
La gara proseguiva sino al tredicesimo passaggio, quando la Direzione di gara esponeva la bandiera rossa, a causa della presenza di olio in pista. Avendo percorso i 2/3 dei 18 giri previsti, la gara veniva dichiarata conclusa e quindi Mahias conquistava la terza posizione ed il suo terzo podio consecutivo nelle ultime tre gare.
Okubo partiva bene dalla settima posizione della griglia e la manteneva per quasi tutta la gara, nel gruppo degli inseguitori. Il pilota giapponese chiudeva al settimo posto, vale a dire nella posizione che occupava al momento dell’interruzione della gara.
Nella classifica del campionato Mahias è quarto con 98 punti, seguito da Okubo con 82.
Il prossimo appuntamento con il campionato mondiale Superbike è fissato per il 27, 28 e 29 settembre sul circuito Nevers Magny Cours in Francia.

Lucas Mahias: “Non so se avremmo potuto ottenere più del terzo posto oggi, perché ho spinto al massimo durante tutta la gara. Penso sarebbe stato difficile finire più in alto perché è stato davvero complicato effettuare i sorpassi. Ho provato a gestire le mie gomme ma è impossibile gestire la copertura anteriore in queste condizioni. Per recuperare sui primi due ho dovuto forzare la gomma anteriore nelle curve più lente e quindi non sono sicuro di come sarebbero stati gli ultimi giri per me. È stata una gara strana ma ho spinto dal primo all’ultimo giro. Non abbiamo fatto i test qui in agosto e quindi per noi l’inizio del weekend è stato difficile. Sono felice per me e per i miei meccanici, perché dopo il primo giorno sarebbe stato facile trovare delle scuse e finire con risultati meno soddisfacenti, ma hanno dato tutti il massimo per tutto il fine settimana. Abbiamo ottenuto il podio perché abbiamo spinto tutti al limite delle nostre possibilità”.

Hikari Okubo: “La gara non è stata molto buona perché non ho potuto seguire il primo gruppo. Concludere questa gara in settima posizione non era quello che volevo. Ho bisogno di lavorare di più sulla moto, ma non ho le idee chiare in questo momento, e quindi devo valutare meglio la situazione generale. Sono abbastanza triste perché anche se la mia posizione in campionato è quinta, io voglio migliorare e vincere. Forse devo modificare ancora di più il mio stile di guida”.

Mahias on the third step of the podium in the WorldSSP race at Portimao

The ninth race of the Supersport world championship took place today at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimao, Portugal.
In yesterday’s Superpole the two Kawasaki Puccetti Racing riders Lucas Mahias and Hikari Okubo achieved third and seventh position respectively, meaning that the Frenchman lined up on the front row of the grid and the Japanese from row three for the race that took place in hot and sunny conditions.
Mahias got away very well as the lights went out and immediately moved into third position. Maintaining a strong pace, the French rider was lying second on lap four, a position he held until lap seven when he found himself back in third place, still part of the leading group that had already built a significant advantage over the rest of the pack.
The race continued until lap thirteen, when race direction brought out the red flag due to oil on track. With two thirds of the 18 laps already completed, the race was declared complete, meaning that Mahias finished in third place, scoring his third consecutive podium.
Okubo made a good start from seventh on the grid and held this position for almost the entire race, part of the chasing group. The Japanese rider closed in seventh place, the position he held when the race was brought to a halt.
In the championship standings, Mahias lies fourth with 98 points followed by Okubo with 82.
The next round of the Supersport world championship is scheduled for the weekend fo 27-29 September at the Nevers Magny Cours track in France.

Lucas Mahias : “I do not know if we could have got more than third place because I was pushing at my maximum during the race. I do not know if we could finish higher because it was difficult to overtake. I tried to manage my tyres but it is impossible to manage the front tyre in these conditions. To come back to the leading two I had to push my front tyre in the slower corners so I am not sure how the final laps would have been. It was a strange race but I pushed from the first to the last lap. I did not test here two weeks ago and the start of the weekend was difficult. But I am happy for myself and my mechanics because after the first day it would have been easy to have a lot of excuses and finish lower in the results – but everybody pushed all weekend. Because we pushed to the limit we got a podium.”

Hikari Okubo: “The race was not so good because I could not follow the top group and finishing this race in seventh position is not what I want. I need to do more work but I do not have any ideas right now, so I need to think about everything a bit more. I am quite sad because although my championship position is fifth, I need to win. Maybe I need to change my riding style more.”
