Okubo vicino al podio a Buriram dopo un’ottima gara. Grande rimonta di Mahias.

Si è disputata oggi al Chang International Circuit di Buriram la seconda gara del campionato mondiale Supersport. Nella Superpole di ieri i due piloti del Kawasaki Puccetti Racing, il giapponese Hikari Okubo ed il francese Lucas Mahias si erano classificati rispettivamente al quarto ed al nono posto e di conseguenza oggi hanno preso il via dalla seconda e dalla terza fila, nella gara che si è disputata in una giornata molto calda, sulla distanza di 17 giri.
Okubo partiva molto forte e si portava nel gruppo di testa. All’incirca a metà gara, a causa di un problema alla moto di uno dei piloti che lo precedevano, Hikari dove rallentare e perdeva il contatto con i primi. Lottando sino alla fine nel gruppo dei diretti inseguitori, Okubo terminava la sua gara al sesto posto, a soli quattro secondi dal vincitore, confermando tutti i progressi compiuti in questo inizio di stagione.
Molto sfortunata la gara di Mahias che era costretto a prendere il via dall’ultima fila dello schieramento in quanto da un controllo effettuato in griglia, risultava che la sua gomma posteriore non fosse gonfiata alla pressione corretta. Il problema è derivato dal cattivo funzionamento di uno dei manometri utilizzati dal suo team. Nonostante questa partenza ad handicap, Lucas si impegnava al massimo e riusciva a recuperare posizioni sino a concludere all’ottavo posto. Un risultato incredibile se si considera la sua posizione di partenza.
Il prossimo appuntamento con il campionato mondiale Supersport è previsto nel weekend del 5-7 aprile al Motorland Aragon nei pressi di Alcaniz, in Spagna.

Lucas Mahias: “La mia moto oggi non andava male, ma sono stati i regolamenti che mi hanno costretto a partire dall’ultima fila della griglia, dopo che è stata misurata la pressione della mia gomma posteriore ed è stata trovata troppo bassa. Sono partito ultimo ed ho terminato ottavo. Oggi non è stato assolutamente possibile finire nelle prime posizioni. Ho recuperato molte posizioni, spingendo al massimo per tre o quattro giri, ma ormai il gruppo dei primi aveva un vantaggio incolmabile e per me non è stato possibile fare meglio di quanto ho fatto”.

Hikari Okubo: “Oggi per la prima volta sono stato in terza posizione in gara, lottando con i migliori piloti di questa categoria. E’ stato difficile restare in quel gruppo ed ho perso qualche posizione nel proseguo della gara. Non sono contento del mio sesto posto, perché oggi il mio obiettivo era il podio, però il gap con il vincitore è stato di soli 4 secondi. Nella gara precedente il mio distacco è stato di 17 secondi, anche se sono finito ugualmente sesto. E’ stato un grosso miglioramento. Devo allenarmi ancora meglio, ma penso di aver raggiunto un livello decisamente più alto in questi ultimi due anni. Spero di continuare a su questa strada anche nei prossimi round in Europa”.

The second round of the Supersport world championship concluded at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram today.In yesterday’s Superpole, the two Kawasaki Puccetti Racing riders, Japanese Hikari Okubo and Frenchman Lucas Mahias classified in fourth and ninth place respectively, meaning a second- and third-row start on the grid for today’s 17-lap race, which ran in very hot conditions.
Okubo got away very well and was straight up in the leading group. By around the mid-race point, due to a problem with the bike of a rider ahead of him, Hikari was forced to slow, losing contact with the frontrunners. Battling to the line with the chasing group, Okubo concluded the race in sixth place, just four seconds from the winner, confirming all of the progress made so far this season.
Mahias had a very unlucky race. He was forced to start from the last row of the grid when a check carried out during the start process identified an incorrectly pressurised rear tyre. It appears the problem resulted from the malfunctioning of the team’s pressure gauge. Despite this handicap, Lucas gave it his all and was able to recover fairly well, moving up as far as eighth place. An incredible result considering his starting position.
The next round of the Supersport world championship will take place over the weekend of 5-7 April at the Motorland Aragon circuit in Alcaniz, Spain.

Lucas Mahias: “The bike was not so bad today, but it was the rules that held us back after my tyre pressure was measured to be too low. I started at the back of the grid and I finished eighth. It was impossible to finish in the front group today. I made up a lot of places, pushing for three or four laps but the group in front was two or three seconds ahead and I couldn’t do more.”

Hikari Okubo: “I rode in third position for the first time in the early laps with some very strong top riders. It was very difficult to stay in that group and I had to drop behind as the race went on. A sixth position I am not happy with because my target was the top three, but the time gap was just 4.5 seconds from the winner. In the last race I was 17 seconds behind. I finished sixth there too. That is a big improvement. I need more good training and better thinking, but I feel I am at a different level from the last two years. I hope I can push hard in the next European rounds.”
